EXPLORING CAREER DECISIONS

The Career and Technical Education Department at Davis Drive Middle School

offers an exciting elective course for sixth grade students.

Exploring Career Decisions provides a competency-based approach that will allow the learner to explore a wide range of careers through hands-on activities.  Below you will find a course description and an outline of the course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This semester course is designed to provide an orientation to the world of work.  Experiences are designed to introduce students to the technical nature of today's world and the role of productive workers. Activities enable students to increase self-awareness and make wise educational and occupational decisions as they plan for careers.  The formal career development planning process often begins within this course.

COURSE OUTLINE

A.  The World of Work

            work in our society and economy, reasons people work, non-traditional careers and equal opportunities, technological expansion in the workplace, skills for work success, workplace relationship skills, problem solving skills, job-seeking skills, money management

B.  Exploring Career Opportunities

            jobs from many areas including Transportation, Public Service, Industry, Health Sciences, Engineering, Construction, Commercial and Artistic Production, Business, Biological and Chemical Technology, Arts, Sciences, Agriculture and Natural Resources, exploration through simulations and a variety of research methods

C.  Career Planning

            the decision-making process, self analysis, how lifestyles and careers are related, a look at high school courses related to specific careers, advanced educational needs
