rising 6th grade information
I am so glad you are interested in joining the DDMS orchestra next year!
We have one of the largest middle school orchestra programs in Wake County with 91 members and we are still growing! We regularly receive Superior Ratings at Contests and Festivals and have a blast in the process!
In the orchestra, you can play one of four instruments:
Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass
As a 6th grader, you have 2 options for orchestra:
1)Beginning Strings: If you have never played a string instrument before or if you have only played for a year or so then you should sign up for our beginning strings class.
2)Intermediate/Advanced Strings: If you have played a string instrument for at least 2 years then you are eligible to
sign up for an audition for the advanced 6th grade class. The level of play in the class will determine the level of
music in which we actually play.
AUDITION INFORMATION FOR INTERMEDIATE/ADVANCED 6th GRADE CLASS
The intermediate/advanced 6th grade orchestra class is designed for students who have played for at least 2 years and provides them with an opportunity to be more challenged and perform music more appropriate to their playing level. They will perform with the 7th and 8th grade orchestras throughout the year.
AUDITION REQUIREMENTS:
1. SCALE
You will play a scale of your choosing as many octaves as you can play.
(I want you to show me what you can do. Play it at a tempo of at least quarter note equals 92.)
2. SOLO
You will play a solo of your choice. The piece should not exceed 1 minute in duration.
3. SIGHT-READING
I will have a piece of music for you to play that you have never seen before. This will show me how well you read music.
Don’t worry if you are not very good at this, I just need to have an idea of where you are.
